Word “Hrid” refers to Hridaya, the space of the heart.
Basti means container or retainer.
This is also called Urobasti( Uro= chest).
Hrid basti is an Ayurvedic therapy that is beneficial not only for the physical heart but also for the emotional heart.
Black gram flour is made into a dough and a reservoir or container is created from it and placed over the sternum(Center of the chest). Warm medicated oils or freshly prepared herbal decoctions are poured into this container or reservoir over the heart region.
In Ayurveda, the heart is considered one among the trimarma(three marma or three vital areas).
Procedure-
The person undergoing Basti is made to lie down on the massage table.
A small ring is made out of the dough of black gram flour and placed over the chest to cover the heart.
It is made leak-proof and medicated oil or herbal decoction is poured into it. It is allowed to stay there for some time. After the procedure, the dough is removed and a gentle massage is given over the chest area. The person is made to rest for a while.
